For the second consecutive year, the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) has awarded a MIAD Industrial Design student Outstanding Student in the Midwest.
Award recipient Steve Hyma ’09 was also awarded the national IDSA Merit Award.
Hyma, currently working with the design team at Milwaukee Electric Tool, was a President’s Honors student and recent Commencement Speaker.
The Midwest award competition pitted his portfolio against those of students from nine accredited Industrial Design programs, including Purdue University, University of Wisconsin-Stout and the University of Notre Dame.
“The award,” said Hyma, “is an honor to me, to the college and to my professors John Caruso and Pascal Malassigné , who was recently named Outstanding Educator in Industrial Design in the Midwest.”
Describing his senior thesis project, on view May 29 – August 8 in the MIAD 2009 Juried Exhibition , Hyma said he used design “to bring a new perspective to urban gardening through modular containers that can fit on a small balcony but also span a rooftop.
“Encompassing storage space, mobility and a reservoir for recycling water, ‘Elevate, *bring your plants to a new level,*’ allows users to create their own environment.”
