First-Year students celebrate juried works at FYE Media Arts Festival ’23

Current and former First-Year Experience (FYE) students at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) celebrated their video, animation and sound design works at the FYE Media Arts Festival 23 – an in-house film and media screening in MIAD’s Community Hub on November 16. The works from the students’ Digital-4D class were judged by four jurors from Cartoon Tavern Studios, a group of young media artists based in Baltimore.

From 87 entries, the jurors announced winners in four categories: STORY: Livinia Rosenthal, “Pee Pee Adventure”; SOUND DESIGN: Noah Couture, “Immersive Murder”; ANIMATION: Mealea Khek, “Paper Dragons”; FILM/VIDEO; Cyrill Reyes, “No Idea.”

Honorable Mentions went to Emily Dahm for “Thoughts in a Picture Frame,” Ash Sanford for “Power on 8,” Olivia Nava for “Sonidos de México” and Darwin Childers for “Debauchery.”

Animator and graphic designer Emma Barany, who is the coin master for Cartoon Tavern Studios, says of Rosenthal’s winning entry, “Its rising action was not only palpable but rather enforced through its visuals and sound designs as well.” See what the jurors said about the additional winning entries.
