Inspired by a call for entries, Shawn K. Simmons, associate professor of Communication Design, has been accepted into two exhibitions for her artist’s book “100 Days: an exercise in information graphics.”
The book was prompted by BookArtObject’s Edition Four call for entries, asking artists to respond to a list of 100 story titles. Captivated by story number 100, “An exercise,” Simmons decided to detail the first 100 days of her life in 2012 by creating an information graphic to represent one event from each of the chronicled days.
Simmons’ book brings together the personal narrative of everyday life described through the impersonal information graphic. Simmons said the juxtaposition of personal and impersonal intrigued her as a graphic designer who remains concept-focuses, rather than driven by style, like many book artists.
“100 Days” will be featured in both the San Diego Book Arts Fifth National Juried Exhibition held at Mandeville Special Collections, Geisel Library, at the University of California, Sand Diego May 4 – June 22, 2014; and Abecedarian Gallery’s Artists’ Book Cornucopia IV in Denver April 18 – June 7, 2014.
Simmons has completed 13 artist’s books for various projects and exhibitions. She is currently working on her second book inspired by BookArtObject’s Edition Four call, “Deception,” and hopes to complete it in the coming months.
