The 11th Biennial Conference hosted by the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design marks the 30th Anniversary of the FATE organization. Join your colleagues from around the country by celebrating in Milwaukee March 28-31, 2007.

Conference Theme – Shift • Connect • Evolve
This conference will center on the ways to be relevant for the new generation of art/design students. The many conference opportunities are intended to help prepare foundations level educators for the shifts that are taking place because of the new student population, the increased use of technology, and the blurring boundaries between disciplines.
The Keynote Speaker, Carol Becker
We are honored that Carol Becker, Dean of Faculty and Senior Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, will be presenting the keynote speech of the conference. Carol Becker is the author of numerous articles and several books with many foreign editions. Her book publications include: The Invisible Drama: Women and The Anxiety of Change; The Subversive Imagination: Artists, Society, and Social Responsibility; Zones of Contention: Essays on Art, Institutions, Gender, and Anxiety; and most recently, Surpassing the Spectacle: Global Transformations and the Changing Politics of Art.
Milwaukee Art Museum
The new Calatrava wing of the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) will be the venue for a Thursday evening conference reception and keynote speaker. Transportation will be provided to take attendees from the Hyatt Regency to MAM. Conference attendees will be provided with a ticket to view the Milwaukee Art Museum collections prior to the keynote speech or another time of their choosing during the conference weekend.
If any attendees desire to view the featured exhibition, Francis Bacon in the 1950s, they will need another ticket that can be purchased for $6. This is the first exhibition to look in detail at this extraordinarily fertile decade in Bacon’s life. It affords the viewer unprecedented insight into the artist’s imaginative powers as well as his constantly evolving sources and techniques. For further information view the MAM website, www.mam.org.
Special FATE 30th Anniversary Celebration Session
In addition to the other panels, presentations, and workshops, on Thursday there will be a special lunchtime panel of pioneering FATE members.
As Chair, Ying Kit Chan from the University of Louisville will give the introduction. Professor Chan has put together the panel of presenters. The panelists and their topics are:

30th Anniversary Reception
Friday evening after the workshops, MIAD will host a reception to celebrate the 30th Anniversary. Refreshments, anniversary cake, beer and wine will be provided. The recipients of the FATE Master Educator Award and the FATE Emerging Educator Award will be announced at this reception where each of the two award recipients will be presented with a $250 check.
FATE Master Educator Award and FATE Emerging Educator Award
A new FATE Master Educator Award and a FATE Emerging Educator Award will be presented in conjunction with our 30th year anniversary celebration at the 2007 conference. The FATE Master Educator Award and a FATE Emerging Educator Award is supported by an anonymous donor who was motivated by the recent and untimely death of Jeff Link, Vice President of Communications for FATE (Columbus College of Art and Design). The donor made the observation that FATE should have an achievement award to recognize major contributors in the field. All nomination materials must be received by the FATE Award Committee Chair by January 3, 2007. 2007 FATE CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS
Workshop attendance will be limited to 20 attendees per session. All workshops will be held at MIAD on Friday afternoon. Transportation will be provided to take attendees from the Hyatt Regency to MIAD. Registration for the workshops will take place on-site.

Project Swap
FATE conference attendees have a long history of swapping unusual or successful studio course concepts/projects. We would like to collect these items in electronic form and burn a CD for each person involved in the swap. If you wish to participate in the swap, please send your project sheet as an email attachment in PDF format to Andrea Bostwick at abostwic@miad.edu. The attachment must be received by March 13, 2007. So as to have a consistent format, title the PDF with your institution, course, and last name.
FATE Membership
Panel leaders, presenters, and attendees must be members of the FATE organization at the time of the conference. For more information about the organization, see www.foundationsinart.org. Taking out a two year membership ($45) at this time will ensure that your membership is active for the 2007 FATE conference. About the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD)
MIAD is Wisconsin’s only 4-year independent, coed, professional art and design college, offering a BFA in eleven majors. MIAD is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD) and North Central Association (NCA). During the conference dates, MIAD’s Layton Gallery will be showing work by George Krause, internationally acclaimed photographer. A juried exhibition of work by MIAD’s foundations students will be in the East Gallery – miad.edu.

The Hyatt Regency Milwaukee, 333 West Kilbourn Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 53203 is situated in downtown Milwaukee. It is the primary venue for the conference activities. A taxi ride from the General Mitchell Airport (MKE) to the downtown Hyatt Regency typically costs $20-$25.
Airport Connection
Airport Connection offers shared ride, private van and executive car service for travelers using General Mitchell Airport (MKE) in Milwaukee as well as Chicago’s O’Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW) Airports. Airport Connection is open 24 hours per day, every day. They have a staffed desk at the Milwaukee airport, making it very easy to find their service upon arrival.
