Yi one of seven to exhibit Nohl Fellowship work
MIAD Foundations Professor Jason S. Yi is one of seven artists whose work will be shown in the 2005 Mary L. Nohl Fellowship Exhibit at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Institute of Visual Arts (Inova).
The exhibition opens with a reception honoring the artists and a gallery talk on Friday, Oct. 13, 6 – 9 p.m., and continues through Dec. 10 at 3253 N. Downer Ave. Yi will give an Artist Talk on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 5:30 p.m.
Yi was selected in fall 2005 as an Established Artist from among 142 applicants with Nicholas Lampert and Fred Stonehouse. MIAD Part-time Foundations faculty member Juan Juarez was selected as an Emerging Artist with Michael K. Julian, Mat Rappaport and Steve Wetzel. A conversation with Juarez and writer Regan Golden-McNerney will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 5:30 p.m.
Funded by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund and administered by UWM’s Peck School of the Arts in collaboration with Visual Arts Milwaukee! (VAM!), the Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists provide unrestricted funds for artists to create new work or complete work in progress.
Yi creates conceptually driven work that crosses various artistic disciplines: sculpture, photography, drawing, video and interactive multimedia installations. “As a curious observer of everyday phenomena, he is interested in how human beings experience the world. The elements of time and history play a crucial role in the creation of his work,” according to a UWM press release.
Yi has exhibited nationally and internationally in New York; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Los Angeles; Japan; Korea; Vietnam; Italy; and Austria. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Kamiyama Museum of Art in Japan, Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles and the Edward F. Albee Foundation in New York. He received his MFA in sculpture from the University of Georgia and his Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech.
