Milwaukee PBS features Veteran Print Project
As part of a documentary on Milwaukee’s Soldiers Home, Scottie Meyers of Milwaukee’s PBS interviewed printmaking students at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD). Grace Ranz ’24 (New Studio Practice: Fine Arts and Illustration) and Grey Higginbotham ’24 (NSP: Fine Arts) created a print currently housed in Milwaukee’s Soldiers Home.
Students in Professor Rina Yoon’s Untold Stories: MIAD Veteran Print Project class collaborate with veterans to create prints based on veteran stories and experiences. Yvette Pino, the founder of Veteran Print Project and herself a veteran and printmaker, began working with Yoon after meeting the professor at a steamroller printing event in Madison, Wisconsin. Excited by the possibility of incorporating community engagement and service experiences for MIAD students, Pino and Yoon collaborated to bring the Veteran Print Project to MIAD.
“I didn’t know much about veterans before this process,” says Ranz, one of the students who worked on the print currently exhibited in Milwaukee’s Soldiers Home. “It was impactful for me.” As part of the printmaking process, students interview veterans and work closely to weave meaningful stories into their artwork. “We wanted to showcase the history of the Veteran Soldiers Home … because it was about representing this veteran community,” says Higginbotham, another of the students involved.
