MIAD Fine Arts junior accepted into 2022 Yale Norfolk Summer Program

Apr 5, 2022

michie miller ’23 (New Studio Practice: Fine Arts) is one of only 22 students nationwide accepted into the prestigious 2022 Yale Norfolk Summer Program.

“To have the labor of love of the past few years reflected back to me in this opportunity is an honor,” says michie.

The Yale Norfolk School of Art, established in 1948, is an intensive six-week undergraduate summer residency program for rising seniors. MIAD supports the selected student by paying the program participation fee.

Sharing their path to this point, michie says, “I started attending MIAD a little later than the average student at 20 years old. Both in high school and the two years following, I had to endure a lot from the environments I was in and was jaded and completely lost.

“In a moment of recollection, I felt the joy that came from making charcoal drawings in MIAD’s summer Pre-College program and I began to build my life to foster that emotion. I made a new portfolio, applied to schools, and started attending MIAD. To now be standing three to four years in the future from that moment … I feel incredibly grateful and loved by the version of myself that chose joy and that chose art.”

Once in the program, michie says their focus will be “in reapproaching my practice in the studio from a different angle as inspired by this new environment. I’m setting my intentions in taking risks and completely enveloping myself in thinking and making. I want to come out of the other side of the experience with a fresh perspective and a closer relationship with myself.”
