MIAD students illustrate book that reinforces early language development for children

Through the MIAD Innovation Center, MIAD students and recent alumni Julia Elaine ’21 (Illustration), Kylie Gritt ’21 (Illustration), Katherine Hambrock ’21 (Communication Design) and Mallory Kubenik ’20 (Communication Design) illustrated a book that reinforces early language development for children.

Rebecca Landa, Ph.D., CEO of Bundle of Learning, wrote the book, “Bear’s Applesauce Picnic,” which comes in a bundle with a backpack, props and toys to engage children in the story. Rebecca’s books apply developmental science research to help children discover meaning in stories and play, and enhance their learning. 

“I learned so much from working on this project. I didn’t just gain real-world experience working with an actual client and an actual book, but I also have a sense of pride from this project [and] what this book really stands for,” said Julia. 

Julia and Kylie collaborated to illustrate backgrounds and story thumbnails, while Katherine and Mallory designed the book layout. 

I was really impressed by the students’ work,” said Rebecca. “They were able to listen to my ideas … and translate that into what the artwork should look like.”

In addition to Bundle of Learning, the MIAD Innovation Center has partnered with clients such as the BizTimes Media, Carmex, Generac, Milwaukee Ballet, the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, and the Milwaukee County Airport. The MIAD Innovation Center connects corporate and nonprofit clients with students who apply technology and creativity to create unmatched design solutions.

‘GQ Rebranded’ series is a hit for MIAD alum’s new studio

When Justin Thomas Kay ’04 (Communication Design) opened his own studio, JTK Studio, Inc., in New York City early this year, he hoped that his work “would contribute positively to helping to make things look nicer and more enjoyable and speak honestly to people broadly.” The new GQ Sports series “GQ Rebranded” turned out to be a good fit to do just that.

Senior’s passion for Illustration and Natural Sciences thrives at MIAD

Reducing food insecurity at MIAD’s People’s Pantry

Students, staff and faculty at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) are addressing short-term food insecurity on campus with direct action. One of the college’s newest resources, the People’s Pantry, provides free food for anyone in the MIAD community who needs a meal, no questions asked.
