Vaeth, a Pfister Hotel 2017-18 Artist-in-Residence finalist, says if chosen, she intends to produce figurative oil paintings reflecting the interaction between guests and staff at the “crossroads” of the hotel.

Two previous artists-in-residence with MIAD ties, Niki Johnson and Todd Mrozinski, have helped her in her artistic journey.

“These two artists are remarkable people who, in different ways, reminded me that my convictions are worth making work about,” Vaeth says.

An Integrated Studio Arts major (now called New Studio Practice), Vaeth pulls from her drawing, painting, sculpture and illustration courses. “This assortment of perspectives has informed how I approach my work and my subject matter.”

Vaeth’s work is on view through mid-February at Gallerie M at the InterContinental Hotel alongside the additional five finalists. The public can vote for a winner, which is taken into account by the juried committee when selecting the ninth Pfister Artist-in-Residence.

“Being a finalist means I am at the beginning of a long journey with a group of strong nominees. I look forward to meeting this group of diversely talented artists.”
