Illustration senior and international student Demi Fung ’15 was selected for the Society of Illustrators’ 2015 Student Scholarship Competition. This marks the third consecutive year a MIAD Illustration student has been chosen.
The competition sees upwards of 8,700 entries each year and selects just over 300 students. A jury of professional illustrators and art directors selects the most outstanding works created throughout the year.
Growing up in the Chinese culture, Demi Fung found that dim sum menus were boring, old-fashioned and even stereotypical. Her illustration, “Dim Sum,” depicts a dim sum menu with a fun, contemporary and stylized twist.
Fung typically illustrates for children and “Dim Sum” fits the bill – the image is whimsical and inviting to the viewer who may be trying dim sum for the first time. Although Fung illustrates for a specific purpose, she recognizes that the viewer’s connection to the image crafts its meaning in the end.
“MIAD’s friendly and supportive environment really helped me to find my own direction as an artist and individual,” said Fung. She was encouraged to apply for the Society of Illustrators’ 2015 Student Scholarship Competition by her Hand-Rendered Type Professor, Ric Stultz.
In association with the competition, the Society of Illustrators hosts the 2015 Student Scholarship Exhibit in the galleries of the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York, May 6 – 30.
