MIAD is not in the countryside, but the countryside came to spring 2014 Illustration Seminar’s seniors when Reader’s Digest Association invited them to design and execute an illustration for its Country Woman Magazine.
“The Illustration Seminar class is at its best when the lessons learned by the students from their guest instructors have as close to real-world implications as possible,” said John Matson, Illustration seminar facilitator.
Guest instructor Lonnie Turner, the art director for several Reader’s Digest publications, created the project with her editor, Lori Grzybowski, and Seminar Facilitators John Matson and Ric Stultz.
Andrei Story ’14 (Illustration) placed first, Cassie Genc ’14 (Illustration) placed second and Kelly Main ’14 (Illustration) placed third. Genc said, “It was great to work with a real magazine and get fine-tuned feedback concerning one’s own illustration, especially when you know the feedback is coming from someone that could be your boss or future client.”
Story added, “The experience felt very relevant to my career. It taught me the value of clear communication with my client, as well as clear communication in the illustration being produced. Because of [this] illustration, I have received many inquiries to do similar illustrations.”
