Laura Horton, Tea Spirit Pattern
Illustration students Laura Horton ’14 and Raven Krupnow ’15 had their work selected from more than 8,700 submissions to be a part of the Society of Illustrators’ 2014 Student Scholarship Competition.
From the 8,700 illustrations submitted for the competition, only 270 students were chosen to represent 48 schools throughout the nation. The illustrations were chosen based on their quality of technique, concept and the skill each student demonstrated using their chosen medium. This is the second consecutive year MIAD Illustration students have been chosen.
Laura Horton’s ’14 illustration, “Tea Spirit Pattern,” depicts happy creatures playfully enjoying a tea party. She strove to create a “warm, soft comfort” for the viewer, as if they were also enjoying a hot cup of tea.
Horton expressed thanks to her mentoring professors, Christiane Grauert (Professor of Illustration) and Chris Beetow (Associate Professor of Illustration), saying their encouragement was an incredible support throughout the process.
Raven Krupnow, The Giver design
Raven Krupnow’s ’15 illustrated cover for the acclaimed novel, The Giver, presents a more stylized approach. Krupnow succeeded in creating an image that was both true to the novel and engaging for the audience. She credits her experiences at MIAD for providing an opportunity to freely explore her own artistic expression, while still providing guidance and direction.
In association with the competition, the Society of Illustrators hosts the 2014 Student Scholarship Exhibit in the galleries of the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York, May 7 – 31.
