The creative energy of MIAD students, alumni and faculty will heat up Milwaukee galleries for January Gallery Night on Friday, January 20 and Gallery Day on Saturday, January 21.
Beki Borman ’04 (Painting) will open her gallery at the Hide House at 2625 S. Greeley St. Her gallery will be open on Friday from 5 – 9 p.m.
Stack’d Burger Bar will feature photography by Trisha Mundt ’13 (Communication Design major, Photography minor) on Friday from 5 – 11 p.m. at 170 S. 1st St.
Shannon Wunderlich ’12 (Integrated Studio Arts major, Art History minor) serves as curator of Gallerie M in the Intercontinental Hotel at 139 E. Kilbourn Ave. The gallery will feature the work of the finalists for the Pfister Hotel’s Artist in Residence program. Visitors will be able to vote for their favorite on Friday from 5 – 9 p.m. and Saturday throughout the day. Brandon Minga ’04 (Illustration) is among the finalists.
Janson Rapisarda ’12 (Printmaking major, Communication Design minor), John Kowalczyk ’10 (Painting), Sara Bott ’11 (Painting), Josey Rice ’10 (Interior Architecture and Design), Calvin Whitehurst ’11 (Integrated Studio Art) and Brittany Ellenz will show work at Ginger Tapas, 235 S. 2nd St., from 7:30 – 11:30 p.m. on Friday.
Mandel Group Creative Studios and Plaid Tuba will show works of resident artists Amanda Gerkin ’06 (Interior Architecture and Design), Melissa Dorn Richards ’96 (Sculpture) and Chrystal Denise Gillon ’91 (Drawing). The gallery will be open from 5 – 9 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at 120 N. Broadway.
A Trio Jewelry Design Studio, 215 N. Water St., will exhibit the creations by their jewelry designer Amy Shallow ’06 (Interior Architecture and Design) on Friday from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Flux Design, founded by alumni Jeremy Shamrowicz ’98 (Industrial Design) and Jesse Meyer, will highlight local artists at Swig, 217 N. Broadway, on Friday from 5 – 11 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
“Burial Grounds: Explorative Drawings,” by David Mueller ’12 (Drawing major, Illustration minor), will open in MIAD’s student-run Erie Street Gallery on Gallery Night and run through February 10. It will be open on Friday from 6 – 9 p.m. and Saturday from 12 – 5 p.m.
“Vivid Notes” will open at Cardinal Stritch University’s Northwestern Mutual Art Gallery and run through February 19. Attendees will see soulful work by Bradley Anthony Bernard ’93 (Painting). The exhibition will be open Friday from 5 – 8 p.m. at 6801 N. Yates Rd.
Chris Andrews ’91 (Sculpture), Lois Johnson ’95 (Sculpture), Jeremy Wolf ’99 (Sculpture), Cindy Rust Saiia ’04 (Sculpture), Care Ekpo ’06 (Sculpture) and MIAD Sculpture Professor Jill Sebastian will help celebrate the grand opening of the Gallery at Vanguard Sculpture Services along with gallery owners Michael Nolte ’81 (Sculpture) and Beth Sahagian ’81 (Sculpture), who will also participate in the exhibition. Weekend hours for “Founders, Sculptors and Metal Performers” will be Friday from 5 – 10 p.m. and Saturday from 12 – 4 p.m. The exhibit will run through February 20 at 3374 W. Hopkins St.
Gallery 218, at 207 E. Buffalo St., Suite 218, will host recent alumni Daniel Fleming ’10 (Communication Design) and Kathryn Kmet ’11 (Photography). Gallery Weekend hours will be Friday from 5 – 10 p.m. and Saturday from 12 – 5 p.m. The exhibition will run through February 26.
“Bright Winter” at Hot Pop will feature works by Kim Weiss ’04 (Printmaking). An opening reception will be held at 213 N. Broadway on Friday from 6 – 9 p.m. The show will run through March 16.
Fine Arts faculty Waldek Dynerman will show work in “Return of the Men” at the Peltz Gallery, 1119 E. Knapp St. The exhibition will be open Friday from 6 – 9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. The show will close March 24.
MIAD’s academic building will host two major exhibitions from 5 – 9 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday. “New Exchanges: Evolving Visual Ideas and Forms,” will open Friday in the Frederick Layton Gallery and run through March 3. The experimental exhibit will include work by students and contributions from alumna Cassandra Smith ’02 (Sculpture) and American Fantasy Classics, a collective comprised of Brittany Ellenz, Liza Pflughoft ’11 (Drawing and Printmaking), Alec Regan ’10 (Integrated Studio Art) and Oliver Sweet ’06 (Printmaking).
Ryan Ramos ’07 (Industrial Design) and Industrial Design faculty John Caruso are two of the six guest curators for “Style Innovation and Vision: Six Perspectives of a Design Collection,” which opened in fall and runs through March 1 in MIAD’s Brooks Stevens Gallery. The curators examine significant design contributions of the past, often with an eye toward the future.
The 19 students in MIAD’s first semester class Professional Practices arranged “de novo: to photograph anew” in MIAD’s River Level Gallery. The exhibit highlights each of the students’ best photography work from the class. The show opened in December and runs through Gallery Weekend.
