Tom Uttech ’65 (Painting) was recently awarded a 2010 Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Five artists were each awarded $7,500 in this category, honoring exceptional accomplishment and encouraging creative work. The awards were presented at the academy’s annual Ceremonial in New York City. Works by the winners of the 2010 Art Awards are currently on view in the Exhibition of Work by Newly Elected Members and Recipients of Honors and Awards.
Uttech grew up in Wisconsin, attended the Layton School of Art – MIAD’s predecessor college – and is currently represented by the Tory Folliard Gallery in Milwaukee and Alexandre Gallery in New York. Over the last decade, he has emerged as one of the most widely admired landscape painters in the United States. After graduating from Layton, Uttech went to graduate school at the University of Cincinnati. He taught for a year at the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock, and was then professor of art at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee from 1968 until 1998.
Uttech recently worked with MIAD printmaking majors to produce a small edition of one of his latest drawings, which he donated to the college’s Creative Fusion scholarship benefit auction on May 8.
