Sixteen Foundations students and their collaborating art and design partners showed their works at an exhibition March 20 at the Milwaukee Art Museum’s MAM After Dark program. The exhibition culminated a month-long experimental exchange of ideas between the students and the established Milwaukee-based artists and designers, who included Santiago Cucullu, kathryn e. martin ’01 and John Riepenhoff.
Foundations Professor Jason S. Yi organized the collaboration with Professor Lynn Tomaszewski.
“Jason and I believe the collaboration was a great opportunity for students to meet, learn from and work with Milwaukee artists and designers, and with the art museum community,” said Tomaszewski.
“By getting students out of the classroom and into the local artist community,” she said, “we believe we challenged them and provided real-world experience. It also provided an opportunity for an additional audience to view their talent. As an added benefit, they made work that extended their thinking and stretched their comfort zone. Of course, they bring this experience back into the classroom, making teaching exciting as well.”
The museum’s highly successful MAM after Dark programs drew some 1,000 people for exhibitions and related activities. The March 20 program, “Fountain of Youth,” included Neroli massages, hair and makeup in addition to MAM’s famous Creation Station “photo booth” and DIY art studio. It ran from 5 p.m. to midnight and was free to MIAD students as MAM members.
