Re-Imagining – Re-Imaging
September 23 – February 14
Brooks Stevens Gallery of Industrial Design
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 25, 6 – 8 p.m.
This innovative and interactive exhibition is curated by MIAD students, and displays 18 artifacts from MIAD’s design collection, with each curator choosing three items. Visitors to the exhibit are encouraged to respond to these objects, through writing, renderings, by creating new works of art or design, and more. These new works will become part of the display for an unspecified period of time. Re-Imagining – Re-Imaging is a very open-ended structure, open to both casual visitors as well as more involved individual investigations and class projects.
Student curators include Stephanie Gage, Kayle Karbowski, Cody Powers and Tom Roberts.
Engendered
January 16 – March 7
Frederick Layton Gallery
Opening Reception: Gallery Night, Friday, January 16, 5 – 9 p.m.
Engendered gathers a group of established artists and writers – international, national and local – to raise awareness of feminism’s cultural contributions in an approachable and relevant way.
Engendered engages the contemporary experience of personal identity through artwork that addresses our relationship to the modern body. Each artwork voices the intriguing and often complicated dynamics of gender identity, and the societal structures in which those identities are forged, grounded and resisted. The bedroom and the body take center stage, creating a space in which the subordinate experience becomes empowered. It strives to ignite further action and dialogue about the inequalities that touch each of our lives, and the strategies through which we negotiate those challenges.
Curated by MIAD Faculty and current Pfister Artist in Residence Niki Johnson. The more than 20 exhibiting artists include local artists Tyanna Buie, Tara Bogart, Emily Belknap ’07 and international artists Henrique Oliveria, Luiz Philippe and Anders Krisar.

Vital Technology
October 17 – December 6
Frederick Layton Gallery
Opening Reception: Gallery Night, Friday, October 17, 5 – 9 p.m.
Vital Technology, a duo exhibition with Milwaukee-based artists Bryan Cera and Nathaniel Stern, uses digital media to invite an exploration of movement as thinking and feeling. The show encompasses large-scale interactive installations – incorporating such technology as body- and motion-tracking, 3D scanning and printing, gesture recognition, and more – as well as more traditional art objects, and process documentation that come out of Cera and Stern’s interactive studio practices.
The artists ask how our ongoing relationships to digital culture continuously change what we move and think and feel.
